"Fairytales for a New Republic"

“Fairytales for a New Republic” were begun in late winter of 2025. As with a lot of my work the origins of the imagery is a mix of the social and personal. These works were begun in dismay at the chainsaw of the DOGE experiment, and the false euphoria of the tariffs revealed on "liberation day" in April 2025. Already at the beginning of the second Trump term in office it felt like we were in for a difficult and wearying four years. The idea of the fairytale as a meeting place of innocence and danger seemed a fruitful metaphor to contain the feelings and ideas that began to arise for me in observing our newly unstable country. I am also ever eager to expand and wander through new territories of figural imagery, and conceptualizing this group of paintings as fairytales allowed me a new, and hopefully affecting freedom.
